The festivities usually begin 2 weeks before Mardi Gras, during these 2 weeks there are more than 50 parades through the city. All the parades are totally funded by private organizations, known as Krewes, they organize everything. Parades can take place day or night, and if we don’t want to stop the party, don’t worry, we always can go to any club of the city, or event go to Bourbon Street, one the most popular party street of New Orleans and the United States.

Parades are the most visible manifestation of Carnival in New Orleans, they are all family friendly, so everybody can go there and enjoy the parades. If you are traveling with kids you can go everywhere outside de French Quarter and Bourbon Street. It’s not the best place for kids, and none of the major parades has entered the French Quarter since 1972 because of its narrow streets. The best parades and the most popular are known as the “Super Krewes” for the massive scale of their parades and they usually star the last weekend before Mardi Gras.

  • On Friday night the most popular parades are Krewe of Hermes, Krewe d’Etat and Krewe of Morpheus.
  • On Saturday we can’t miss Krewe of Tucks, Krewe of Isis and the first super Krewes, the Endymion parade.
  • On Sunday night we can join Bacchus parade led by numerous celebrities.
  • On Monday Zulu and Rex members arrive by boat on the Mississippi River, and there is an all-day party at the foot of Canal Street. On Monday we can also enjoy the Krewe of Proteus, the second oldest in the city and one of the most prestigious, and the Krewe of Orpheus, one of the newest.
  • Tuesday is the big day in New Orleans, the famous Mardi Gras day or Fat Tuesday, the best parades are held that day. Zulu, the city’s oldest African-American krewe is the firsts and then the Rex parade, whose leader is known as the King of Carnival, and one of the symbols of Mardi gras.

Remember that on Fat Tuesday or Mardi Gras you can dress up as anything imaginable, there are contests for costumes everywhere in the city, and it’s funny to watch people’s imagination.
